Abstract
If Mary Queen of Scots wished to marry, she would do very well for herself if she took for her husband Robert, Lord Dudley, the English Master of the Horse Such was the message that Queen Elizabeth conveyed to the Scottish secretary William Maitland of Lethington in March 1563.
