Item Assessing the Protective Effects of School Belonging Against the Risk of Limited English Proficiency(2011-12-14) Barclay, Christopher M; Dr. Scott Weaver; Dr. Chris Henrich; Georgia State UniversityA study was conducted among a sample of Korean American students to investigate the potential moderation of the risks related to English proficiency by the protection of school belonging. Perceived scholastic competence, self-reported school grades, and academic expectancies were used for dependent variables. It was hypothesized that students with higher sense of belonging would be less affected by English proficiency than their peers with lower sense of belonging. The risk of English proficiency was confirmed. However, school belonging did not have as much of an effect as expected and students with higher English proficiency seemed to gain more benefit from increased school belonging. This finding reminds educators of the pressing importance of English proficiency, and future research is suggested to investigate the unique effects of belonging among students of Korean, and perhaps other Asian, backgrounds.
Item Longitudinal Analysis of Risk Factors Affecting Reading Trajectories in Children Diagnosed with Pediatric Brain Tumors(2012-05-06) Ailion, Alyssa S; Tricia Z. King; Christopher C. Henrich; Georgia State UniversityPrior research suggests aggressive cancer treatments contribute to cognitive impairments in children diagnosed with pediatric brain tumors. The literature also suggests that younger age at diagnosis (AAD) and treatment may result in disrupted cognitive trajectories due to limited brain plasticity. In line with this research, we hypothesized an interaction between radiation therapy (RT) and young AAD of brain tumors, where young AAD and RT results in lower standard scores on the WRAT-R Reading Comprehension Subtest. Analyses included archival data; the sample consists of 134 children diagnosed with pediatric brain tumors with multiple assessments resulting in 487 cases for analysis. Participants were diagnosed with mixed tumor types and locations. A two level multilevel model was used to analyze reading trajectories while taking into account AAD, time since diagnosis, socioeconomic status (SES), and RT. Results detected a positive interaction between AAD and RT (γ =2.08, p=.02). For participants with RT, younger AAD was associated with lower reading scores, whereas AAD had no effect for participants without RT. Results also detected a negative interaction between radiation and time (γ =-2.29, p=.00) indicating that children treated with RT have reading scores that decrease over time. These data suggested that children diagnosed with pediatric brain tumors treated with RT are at higher risk of reading impairment as reflected in their reading scores.
Item Steadfastness, Resistance, and Occupation in the Works of Sahar Khalifeh(2011-12-05) Cotter, William; Dr. Nadine Adel SinnoThis comparative study offers a close reading of Palestinian author Sahar Khalifeh’s Wild Thorns and The End of Spring. The paper focuses on the discussion that the novels explore with regards to the varying methods of resistance to the Israeli occupation of Palestine. I argue that the novels mainly portray two differing modes of resistance: steadfastness, or nonviolent resistance and armed resistance. Additionally, I analyze the critique that Khalifeh provides in her novels of the Palestinian Authority government in the West Bank and discuss the mental and emotional repercussions of the occupation on the daily lives of civilians.

Item The Stigma and Unintended Consequences of Affirmative Action in the Workplace(2005-05-20) Wilson, Latoya; Dr. Kay BunchWhen the general public discusses Affirmative Action, they are more likely to make an assumption that the person is not qualified without seeking their actual qualifications. Some may hesitate to provide any reasonable explanation for their opposition because the policy is a controversial topic. The goal of this journal was to search for the possibilities that may actually inspire their opposition and relate it to the stigma theory, which might explain some of these reasoning.
By focusing on black recipients in the workforce research on the policy and reactions to Affirmative Action, some researchers appeared to study according to what they think Affirmative Action is supposed to accomplish. There are not enough scholars, with a specialization in human resource, to provide objective facts about the actual intent of the policy.
It appears that some managers are not knowledgeable on how to manage the program legal. When certain individuals, who are supposed to have expertise on this policy, are not knowledgeable, then the public cannot be expected to be knowledgeable about the policy. The purpose is to look at Affirmative Action from an objective point of view to differentiate the actual purpose of the policy from the stereotypical purpose of the policy. Recommendations are provided to determine how Affirmative Action can prove to the critics that it is necessary when the program is operated properly.
Item Narratives of Anatomy: Arranging Identity and Regulating Visibility in the Nineteenth Century Anatomical Museum(2010-12-13) Wolf, Stephanie Alana; Maria P. Gindhart; Georgia State UniversityDuring the nineteenth century, museums dedicated to the collection, preservation, and display of human anatomy became familiar institutions in America and Europe. The anatomical museum operated under one of two guises: popular museums run as commercial establishments, or medical museums attached to a professional medical society or college. Over the course of the century, the medical establishment sought to cement its authority over anatomy by legitimating its expertise through specialized training. Doctors criticized commercial anatomical museums, which were eventually closed under accusations of obscenity, yet there was considerable overlap in the types of objects on display at both museums. This paper examines how the medical museum was permitted to supersede its commercial cousin and explores the exhibitionary narratives at the sites of both types of institutions.
Item On Gender and Identity in Three Shakespearean Texts(2010-05-15) Crawley, Jocelyn Dukes; Dr. Robert Sattelmeyer; Georgia State UniversityThe purpose of the present study was to examine the role that sociocultural and political mores play in shaping male and female value systems. The aforementioned value systems were examined with respect to the role they played in the development and evolution of the individual’s self-concept as well as how such persons interacted with other individuals in context of romantic/sexual relationships. To contextualize the construction of individual and collective identity as it pertains to the amorous sphere, consideration was given to culturally bound realities such as religious and political mores as they unfolded within both the Renaissance era and world of the text as constructed by its author. Findings included a great propensity towards the silencing and subjugation of women when they entered romantic relationships with men. However, various passages and themes of the plays examined revealed that female independence and agency can be realized within the romantic sphere.
Item A Universal Framework for (nearly) Arbitrary Dynamic Languages(2013-05-01) Sterling, Shad; Rajshekhar Sunderraman; Georgia State UniversityToday's dynamic language systems have grown to include features that resemble features of operating systems. It may be possible to improve on both by unifying a language system with an operating system. Complete unification does not appear possible in the near-term, so an intermediate system is described. This intermediate system uses a common call graph to allow components in arbitrary languages to interact as easily as components in the same language. Potential benefits of such a system include significant improvements in interoperability, improved reusability and backward compatibility, simplification of debugging and some administrative tasks, and distribution over a cluster without any changes to application code.
Item It's Real For Us: The Literariness of Fanfiction and Its Use As Corrective Fiction(2013-08-06) Monroe, Lauren W; Daniel Marshall; Georgia State UniversityThe focus of this thesis is how fanfiction, an underground subculture of web literature written about popular books, films, television shows, and comics, treats the original works it derives from. In this study I will examine the ways in which fans reshape the original stories of the works they write about, and the ways in which they do not, and speculate the reasons they have chosen to do so. This project examines fanfiction surrounding three young adult novels: Twilight, The Hunger Games, and Harry Potter. I examine each of these works and their respective fanfiction in order to highlight important themes in each work and problems inherent in each story to account for the changes fanfiction writers make in their literature. I have chosen one overarching theme in the fanfiction in each fandom and will explore why fanfiction authors have overwhelmingly chosen to change the source material to suit that theme.
Item Effects of Country of Origin and Cognitive Development on Psychological Adjustment and Family Cohesion of Latino Youth Witnesses of Domestic Violence(2012-07-31) Allaire, Ted D.; Macias, R. Perilla; Georgia State University; Georgia State University; Georgia State UniversityLatino children living in the context of domestic violence (DV) often lack access to cultural-specific services. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among Latino children’s level of cognitive development (age), country of origin and psychological adjustment as well as styles of coping with domestic violence . Analysis of data collected from an interview conducted with Latino children at a local DV intervention program suggests that Latino children utilize a range of coping responses when confronted with violence in their homes. In a regression analysis using psychological adjustment as the dependent variable, developmental age was not related to adjustment in children. However, country of origin was a significant predictor of psychological adjustment. That is, immigrant children reported lower levels of psychological adjustment compared to children born in the U.S. This remained true while controlling for age, coping strategy, and family cohesion. The growing number of immigrant Latino children in the United States increases the need for culturally relevant research with racial and ethnic minority groups in regard to DV. These findings suggest immigrant Latino children have unique needs in the context of DV.
Item Axial Ligand Mutant: H229A(2008-08-08) Nguyen, Nhung Phuong; Dr. Dabney Dixon; Dr. Robert SattelmeyerMany pathogenic bacteria use their iron acquisition mechanisms to live inside hosts. Streptococcus pyogenes is a pathogenic bacterium that uses streptococcal iron acquisition ABC transporter to obtain heme. SiaA (HtsA, spy1795), a lipoprotein located on the cell surface, serves as a heme binding protein. To understand the iron-uptake mechanism, histidine 229, one of the two proposed axial ligands in SiaA, was mutated to alanine. SiaA H229A was expressed in E. coli, lysed by French Press, and purified by fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC). SDS-PAGE indicated that pure protein was isolated. Nickel affinity FPLC gave purer H229A when 0.5 M imidazole was added to the binding buffer. Overall, histidine 229 is likely to be an axial ligand in wild type SiaA, as shown by the fact the mutant readily lost heme as evidenced by UV-vis spectra.
Item Ruling Out David Miller's Argument for Immigration Restrictions(2011-12-05) Delarosa, Yenipher; Andrea Scarantino; Georgia State UniversityThe paper will describe one of David Miller’s arguments for limiting immigration by concluding that immigration is a threat to a successful democratic welfare state. There is a threat to a democratic welfare state when there is lack of trust in a heterogeneous society. Immigration contributes to heterogeneity. The paper will present flaws in Miller’s argument, which include the unacknowledged concepts of ignorance and fear that can lead to mistrust in cultural heterogeneous communities. I will then consider Miller’s response to the critiques. Lastly, I will mention some proposals for increasing trust and addressing the real issues in a multicultural society.
