Abstract
ABSTRACT
The poetry collection, Relics, draws from memory, autobiography, history, and imagination to explore themes of family, identity, and place using lyric and form. The collection is divided into three sections. The first section grounds the reader in the speaker’s experience with poems that reflect on childhood are rooted in themes of place, family, violence, divorce, war, and loss. The second section includes “Marisol” poems, fifteen loose sonnets on an imagined persona self, Marisol. The third section explores the speaker moving beyond generational trauma into present day life and societal issues seeped in the moment and memory as a woman, mother, wife, teacher, and writer. The poems in the collection possess an ecological essence as the speaker of observes and immerses in the environment and natural spaces.
