Abstract

Multiple studies have found that outdoor mobility devices (OMDs) offer many benefits to people with disabilities, including physical activity, social engagement, increased self-efficacy, and improved overall wellbeing (Goodwin et al., 2009; James et al., 2018; Menzies et al., 2021; Sachs, 2024; Wildish et al., 2024). Despite these benefits, there is currently no evidence-based guideline for selecting an OMD. The purpose of this exploratory project was to create an evidence-based guidebook for selecting the best OMD to meet one’s needs. This 14-week study used a mixed-method design- the primary method was interviews to gather subjective data. Interviews primarily took place online via Webex, but several took place over the phone or at in-person locations convenient for the participants. There were three groups of participants- OMD users, who were referred to as “riders”, adaptive program staff, and OMD manufacturers. In total, 29 codes were created from interview data and were grouped to create 7 core themes: person-device fit, device-terrain fit, tradeoffs, the need for inclusive design, access and awareness, safety and comfort, and try before you buy. These themes were used to guide the main topics of the guidebook, which is 118 pages long and counting. The goal of the guidebook is not only to inform people with disabilities on how to choose an OMD, but also to raise awareness in the general public.
