Abstract
This convening brings together artists and cultural professionals to examine how accessibility, workplace norms, and financial structures determine who can sustain a long-term career in the arts. The question is not only who can enter, but who can remain, build relationships, and advance over time.
Arts organizations often position themselves as leaders in cultural change. But leadership requires more than inclusion. It requires examining how institutions structure engagement, define expectations, and distribute opportunity, to determine whether those structures account for the full range of people doing the work.
This program proceeds from a simple premise: that the conditions limiting disabled artists' participation are not inevitable. They are the product of choices about hiring, scheduling, and definitions of professionalism, and they can be changed. The sections that follow name those conditions and outline what different practice requires.
