Abstract

Restorative practices in schools is a discipline management strategy that is used to restore relationships between offenders and victims. Restorative practices help increase the sense of belonging for students by building a connection between other students and/or teachers. When students feel connected to their schools it can help improve school climate. The purpose of the study is to explore school leaders’ implementation process of restorative practices in their school and to understand their perception of how their implementation has impacted their school’s climate. The study utilized Weick’s (1995) sensemaking theory as it’s theoretical framework to understand leaders thought process while implementing restorative practices. To help understand the implementation processes utilized by the school leaders and their perception of the school climate, a qualitative case study was utilized. There were eight participants selected to complete one semi-structured interview that lasted no longer than one hour. Each participant was selected utilizing purposeful sampling. Each leader needed to have met the following criteria: led at their school for a minimum of two years, lead in an urban school in metro Atlanta and implemented restorative practices in their current school. Each interview was transcribed and coded to into themes to gain a greater understanding of the implementation process and the perceived impact on the school’s climate. Based on the interviews with the school leaders, three main themes emerged: a focus on the implementation process with a focus on teacher support and hiring personnel, an overall positive perceived impact on the school’s climate from each participant and a varied approach to the implementation process. In conclusion, as schools consider whether they would like to implement restorative practices, it is important to consider created strict structures around the implementation process which include a tiered support system. It is also important to consider having a sole individual oversee the process to streamline the efforts by the school.
