Abstract
This study explores how The Gambia can better leverage remittances and diaspora engagement for sustainable growth. Using a mixed-methods approach, it combines survey data from 299 respondents across seven regions with interviews from key government institutions. The research focuses on integrating remittances into national strategies, addressing brain drain, and evaluating migrant protection policies. Findings show that remittances improve household stability, education, and entrepreneurship but are mostly treated as private flows. Skilled migration causes brain drain, though diaspora programs offer potential for knowledge transfer. Migration also presents psychosocial challenges, while government efforts remain fragmented and poorly communicated. The study concludes that The Gambia needs a coordinated policy framework to transform remittances into drivers of inclusive growth. It recommends creating a National Remittance and Investment Framework, a Diaspora Skills Registry, and stronger migration management programs to align diaspora engagement with national development priorities.
