Importance: To fill the gap of knowledge regarding the importance of play to both parents/caregivers and professionals. Additionally, increase advocacy for accessibility of play through valuable community resources. Objective: The purpose of this capstone project is to (1) educate parents/caregivers on the developmental benefits of play through a virtual guide and practical strategies; and (2) encourage pediatric therapists to advocate for play for their clients through education of the community partner Lekotek of Georgia. Design: A two-pronged design: (1) Purposeful Play and (2) An Opportunity to Play with mixed methods design Setting: Lekotek of Georgia Participants: Parents who utilize Lekotek services, Lekotek staff members and pediatric therapists located in metro Atlanta. Intervention: The Purposeful Play intervention is a virtual parent guide to play; the An Opportunity to Play intervention is an in-service presentation with a corresponding informational flyer. Outcomes: The project consisted of 4 outcome measures: (1) Purposeful Play usefulness survey, (2) An Opportunity to Play pre-survey, (3) An Opportunity to Play post-survey, (4) A key informant interview. Results: The parents/caregivers and Lekotek staff members reported the Purposeful Play resource was useful, easy to understand and feasible to implement. Additionally, participating pediatric therapists indicated they would refer to Lekotek in the future after the An Opportunity to Play in-service. Lastly, 3 themes were derived from the key informant interview: (1) Play is underutilized, (2) Accessible resources for education about play are valuable, (4) There is importance in building connections in community to further support families Conclusion: Both initiatives filled the gap in knowledge about the benefits of play and how to practically implement it.
