Abstract

Abstract Importance: Sex is considered as an essential ADL and crucial for overall health and wellness. Even though sexual health education is a widely discussed topic, marginalized groups such as individuals with IDD are perpetually neglected in this health sector. Additionally, existing sexual health curricula lack inclusive representation that validates the lived experiences of diverse individuals. The aim of this study is to reconstruct an inclusive sexual health course based on a conducted Needs Assessment and existing sexual health curricula for adults with IDD at an IPSE program. Outcomes and Measures: Two sexual health curricula currently offered at an IPSE program from GSU were used as foundational information for the reconstructed course. A Needs Assessment was conducted in order to tailor the course specifically to the students attending the IPSE program. 13 participants, who are stakeholders of the IPSE program, completed a survey on the reconstructed sexual health course to assess its feasibility, acceptability, and level of inclusivity. Results: More than 75% of the IPSE program stakeholders perceived that the reconstructed sexual health course was acceptable and feasible for students with IDD attending the IPSE program. Additionally, more than 69% perceived the sexual health course to be inclusive, representing diverse identities.
Conclusion and Relevance: An inclusive sexual health course can potentially be a feasible and acceptable health intervention to not only increase foundational knowledge, but allow adults with IDD to engage in an essential ADL through safe practices and habits. Results from this study also creates pathways for OTs to engage in interprofessional collaboration and step into pedagogical roles for marginalized communities. Plain-Language Summary The purpose of this project is to assess if a reconstructed sexual health course is feasible, acceptable, and inclusive enough to increase foundational knowledge and applicable skills for adults with IDD. This was done through an inclusive sexual health course that represents not only different disabilities, but also different racial groups and LTBQIA+ (Lesbian, Transgender, Bisexual, Queer, and Asexual) individuals. This course also includes different aspects of sexual health to build skills in navigating different companionships such as friendships, professional relationships, and romantic relationships. The findings from this project found that the inclusive sexual health course was feasible, acceptable, and inclusive to use and teach to adults with IDD in a post-secondary education program. This course shows potential in equipping adults with IDD with the tools to increase independence and safety in their own sexual health. Future research is needed to assess level of increased knowledge among adults with IDD with implementation of this course.
