Abstract
The establishment and acknowledgment of a new emergence of subgenre is no common occurrence and must be given consideration from all angles as to its very definition and essence. Cozy horror, a hybridization of both cozy games and horror games, is most notably known for its deep affective awareness, unique and overtly stylized aesthetic nature, and socio-cultural relations centered around the cultural relevancy of its time, having risen within the past five years following the aftermath of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. This thesis focuses on breaking down the unique features and tracking the inspirational relevancies through literature and film that have contributed to the creation of this new emerging subgenre through textually analyzing video games starting from the mid 2010’s to current day in 2025, ending with The Midnight Walk, otherwise argued in this thesis as the epitome of cozy horror.
