Abstract
Drawing from New Literacy and Aging Studies theories, this project bridges dichotomous conceptions of rural Appalachia by analyzing nine oral history interviews conducted with older adults from Blue Ridge, Georgia. It emphasizes moments from the interviews that expand commonsense conceptions of literacy, aging, and labor, specifically the type of work required to build a long, meaningful life in the surroundings of the Blue Ridge area. In arguing for a new conception of literacy and aging, this project highlights the obstacles and opportunities for people in the region to establish, maintain, and alter their relationships and social support systems.
