Health is a complex social construct shaped by morality, race, gender, socioeconomic status, and other social forces and structures. This study examines how online communities function as powerful sites for both reproducing dominant health norms and generating counter-narratives around health and bodies. Using qualitative content analysis of blog posts, I analyzed how social media spaces reinforce conventional definitions of health while also enabling their contestation, drawing on samples from pro ana blogs and fat positive/body positive posts. Findings show that pro-ana communities largely reproduce and legitimize existing power structures, whereas body positive and fat positive communities cultivate critical, action oriented spaces that challenge normative health and body ideals. These spaces function as important sources of social interaction and meaning building, underscoring the sociological significance of virtual communities.
