Abstract

Chữ Việt is a graphic design project aimed at creating a variable font that addresses the complexities of Vietnamese diacritical and tonal markers, drawing inspiration from Vietnam’s cultural heritage. The objective is to develop a typeface that enhances the legibility of Vietnamese in both digital and print design while celebrating the language's cultural richness. This project tackles a long-standing issue in the design community: Western fonts often inadequately support the unique needs of Vietnamese speakers. Despite some advancements, culturally expressive and technically reliable Vietnamese-made fonts remain scarce. If successful, Chữ Việt will contribute to the Vietnamese design landscape, providing greater visibility and authenticity in typography and offering a valuable tool for designers to represent the language and culture with added precision, respect, and pride.
