Abstract
The historic relationship between Black Americans and water is long and complex. We faced forced migration and erasure along the Atlantic Ocean, but have also found respite and power in its blueish-green, reflective properties. The Deep Blue is an exhibition of still and moving images, quilts, and sculptures imbued in shades of blue that examine water as a site of transformation, a portal for connection, and as a central component to the identities and traditions of Black Americans. Drawing inspiration from folklore, spiritual writings, media, and visual art, I explore water as a critical and magical element of Black life.
