Abstract

Despite arson’s numerous harmful effects on society and the economy, arson investigation suffers from a lack of exploration in policing and criminology. Scarcely little is known about the professional lives of arson investigators, the challenges they encounter on the job, and how they orient to these challenges. This dissertation attempts to address this gap using a multi-method approach, combining two studies that use different qualitative methods: Study 1 uses semi-structured qualitative interviews with arson investigators at the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD), while Study 2 centers around a focus group procedure with arson investigators in the same department. The dissertation then integrates the findings of the two studies to draw conclusions and suggest future directions. My research shows that despite expressing satisfaction with their work, arson investigators also report frustrations related to dealing with a crime that relies too much on circumstantial evidence, working with prosecutors unwilling to pursue arson cases, a lack of recognition from the public, etc. Arson investigators also experience role conflict as they attempt to balance policing and fire service duties.
