Abstract
Transgender and nonbinary people whose gender identity does not align with the one assigned at birth face bias and stigma in many aspects of their daily lives, including when they seek routine medical care for medical conditions or injuries. They frequently have limited options in finding healthcare providers who are open to treating gender diverse individuals and also know how to provide appropriate care for this population. Medical providers bring their personal biases to the healthcare encounter, and this bias often results in felt stigma for transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals. Fear of this stigma can lead to avoidance and also affects whether the patient adheres to treatment prescribed or returns for follow-up care, both of which are known to have a detrimental effect on the patient’s health status.
