Abstract

I have encountered a deep disconnection from my body, shaped by a Western perspective that disavows the felt body experience. It is only through bodily discomfort that we begin to identify, objectify, and treat our absent bodies. We become unaware of our internal world though physical pain, medical diagnoses, or the fear of mortality. I am curious about how we can sense our instinctive realms from the inside out—our “gut reactions.” Auscultation uses sound and sculpture installations to explore the body beyond language, medical terms, and historical layers. Through a phenomenological investigation of my sick, fleshy habitat, I create art that uses sound to dissect layers of skin and tissue, reaching the heart of lived experience. How does noise, listening, and silence foster bodily awareness? Through these sonic layers, I am redefining my inner system of knowing and inviting participants to explore their own embodied awareness.
