Abstract

Music is a business that requires creativity, strategy, and market awareness. There are key elements that go into making a song both memorable and marketable in order to thrive in today’s music industry. This thesis explores how the digital age affects recorded music, what elements make the ideal song in both music distribution and sync, what the most efficient post-release strategies are, and how listener satisfaction compares or contrasts to the fact-based research based on participants' opinions. Together, these questions will determine the traits that define an “ideal” song in today’s marketplace. Through analysis of popular music, surveys of a diverse group of listeners, case studies, journals, and other publications surrounding music, the research needed to analyze the thesis information is obtained. The hypothesis guiding this research is that songs with simplified, emotional elements following a clear structural pattern and a strong distribution strategy are more likely to achieve mainstream attention. The purpose of these findings is to provide simplified actions and detailed knowledge for emerging artists, producers, and other music professionals wanting to enhance their knowledge on a potential guide for a song to thrive in a competitive marketplace. The findings of this paper support the hypothesis but provide specific details for a song’s success. Qualities of music production like a verse-chorus song structure, an AABB or ABAB rhyme scheme, a clear tone identified in the lyrics, and the use of catchy as well as contrasting musical elements make the ideal song. In addition, properly planned post-release strategies surrounding social media and promotion of recorded music, as well as self-promotional efforts, make up the “perfect” song. Gaining traction from listener feedback is based on emotional connection to the musical piece over all other qualities. Understanding that listeners are the driving force behind music success.
