As the site of the forced displacement and mass murder of indigenous peoples, the region that unabashedly carried out the horrors of slavery then later enforced Jim Crow laws, and the place where the land itself is quarried to meet the energy consumption needs of an entire nation, the American South has left its people in the wake of its atrocities. In response, many of the people of this region have had to come together, fend for themselves in resourceful ways, and, often, construct their own happy endings.
