Abstract

Background. The sibling relationship is one of the most influential, longest lasting bonds in a child’s life, serving as a crucial source of social, emotional, and developmental growth. Typically developing (TD) siblings of children with disabilities often assume unique family roles, placing them at increased risk of behavioral and emotional challenges. However, much of the existing research and advocacy focuses on the child with a disability, leaving the TD siblings underrecognized and at risk for challenges. Objective. The purpose of this doctoral capstone project is to develop a comprehensive parent guide designed to foster healthy sibling relationships through inclusive, accessible activities that siblings of all abilities can enjoy together. Additionally, the guide offers valuable resources to support each family member and strengthen the family unit as a whole. ACOTE Area. The primary ACOTE area relevant to this project is Program Development and Evaluation. Methods. The program was developed through a structured, multi-step process. It began with a comprehensive literature review to explore the significance of sibling relationships, strategies for supporting TD siblings, and methods for fostering inclusion among siblings with differing abilities. Following this, a survey study was conducted to gather insights from parents about their children’s sibling dynamics, as well as the support and challenges present in families where at least one child has a chronic disability. The data collected from the surveys was analyzed and synthesized to create the initial development of the Sib Strong parent guide. Once the guide was created, individual parent interviews were conducted to evaluate its usability and relevance within the home environment. Based on interview feedback, thoughtful refinements were made to enhance the guide’s effectiveness and ensure it better met the needs of the families it was designed to support. Results. The final Sib Strong parent guide is a comprehensive resource designed to help parents support their TD children while fostering strong, meaningful relationships with their siblings who have disabilities. The program is a 33-page PDF document that features a variety of adaptable, inclusive activities that siblings of all abilities can enjoy together. The guide also includes a thoughtfully curated list of resources aimed at supporting each individual family member and strengthening the overall family unit. Conclusions and Relevance. The guide reflects core occupational therapy values by promoting family-centered care and addressing the needs of the entire family, rather than focusing solely on one individual. It represents the use of play as a meaningful occupation that supports skill development, fosters inclusion, and strengthens the bond between siblings with and without disabilities.
