Recently, the University of Georgia unearthed one-hundred remains beneath an academic building that were once previously enslaved. I argue that viewing this discovery and the subsequent community reactions and memorializations through a feminist, de-colonial perspective opposes Manifest Destiny narratives that the U.S. and its’ universities formed benignly. Additionally, I unite histories of slavery, settler colonialism, and whiteness at UGA’s site to demonstrate how different marginalized groups overlapped in certain spaces and to question how we view not only land but also how we (mis)remember the history of disenfranchised groups in relation to one another and their spatial interactions.
