In this paper, I seek to understand how painters, photographers, and some writers use the mirror or mirror techniques to find their identity, a form of reality in the distorted reflections of a mirror, or to help others see and understand the power of manipulation and distortion the mirror has in order to ease fear. I believe that any phobia towards a mirror is caused by the inability to confront oneself and so a phobia of mirrors is a phobia of facing your brain. In the mediums mentioned, I have noted that the inability to face a mirror has been manifested in many forms as a way to search for reality or an alternate reality to the one we have imagined.
