Abstract
LEEK, Kathryn (Georgia State University) Drama Therapy: A Character Analysis of the Self. Providing a platform for the expression of stigmatized emotional expressions, this research reveals an alternative approach for combating maladaptive emotion regulatory strategies and encourages self-discovery and self-acceptance despite the confines of socio-cultural consequences. Proceeding psychodramatic expression, individuals often report a catharsis. This research was conducted through a series of semi-structured interviews with actors, acting coaches, and other individuals working within the entertainment industry. In addition to interviews, ten years of participant observation functions as the primary foundation of data presented. The use of a holistic methodology of interdisciplinary perspectives such as performative, anthropological, psychological, and neurological fields of study has constructed a thorough investigation into this acclaimed phenomenon. In addition to fostering mental health and growth, the movement of drama therapy inspires a psychological unearthing of one’s self through creative practice.
