Abstract
This dissertation is a collection of poetry that examines the intersections of white feminism, rape culture, and the internet—and particularly complicity within those intersections. How my subject position as an educated white woman navigates and is complicit within this network of issues is the driving question of Double Bind. This complicity informs both the title, taken from Gregory Bateson’s sociological theory coined in the 1950s, and the collection’s dominant form of the couplet. This dissertation engages with contemporary feminist theory, the insidious concept of self-care, and the political capital of white womanhood. In doing so, these poems replicate and complicate my own history of feminist thinking and confront the contemporary moment’s increasingly commodified feminist movement.
